Manual or electric?

Manual models (Minipresso, Nanopresso, Picopresso) need no electricity, batteries or gas cartridges. You add hot water from a kettle or flask, then pump the piston to build pressure. They are light, compact and work anywhere, which makes them ideal for hiking and camping.

Electric models heat the water for you, so you only need water and coffee.

  • The Wacaco Pixapresso heats 55 ml of water to 92°C and extracts 40 ml of espresso at the touch of a button. It has a 120 ml water tank, an adjustable 8–16 g basket, pre-infusion or direct brew, and 6 functions (ristretto, espresso, double, lungo, heat and extract/clean). It runs on 3 x 3000 mAh batteries and charges over USB in about 2 hours 30 minutes with a charger above 10 W. It weighs 755 g.
  • The NOWpresso Gold PLUS also heats and pumps with one button, heats in under 5 minutes, brews 3–4 cups per charge, works with capsules and ground coffee, and pours into a detachable clear cup.

Capsules or ground coffee?

  • Capsules are the cleanest and quickest option: no measuring and no mess. Choose the Minipresso NS or NS2.
  • Ground coffee gives you the widest choice of beans and roasts. Choose the Minipresso GR, Nanopresso or Picopresso.
  • Both: the Pixapresso and NOWpresso Gold PLUS take ground coffee and capsules.

Which portable espresso maker is right for you?

  • First portable espresso maker: Minipresso GR (ground) or Minipresso NS (capsules). Simple, compact and easy to use.
  • Best capsule option: Minipresso NS2, with an integrated water tank and drip tray.
  • Best all-rounder: Nanopresso, with up to 18 bar of pressure at only 336 g. Special editions are available, including the Nanopresso Elements in Chill White and the Nanopresso Dark Souls edition, both with a protective case.
  • For coffee enthusiasts: Picopresso, the most compact pro-oriented Wacaco, with a naked portafilter so you can watch the crema flow.
  • No hot water on hand: Pixapresso or NOWpresso Gold PLUS, which heat the water themselves.

Tips for better espresso on the go

  • Use freshly ground coffee with a fine, espresso-style grind for ground-coffee models.
  • Use hot water with manual models: they don’t heat water, so start with water just off the boil.
  • Pre-warm the device by running some hot water through it before your shot to keep the espresso hot.
  • Rinse it after each use so old coffee oils don’t spoil the next cup.

Coffee accessories for travel

  • Wacaco Cuppamoka: a travel pour-over system no bigger than a cup, with a built-in dripper, a 300 ml double-wall stainless steel mug and a leakproof lid.
  • Wacaco Octaroma Classico: a 180 ml vacuum insulated mug.
