Kids’ Headphones: Volume Limits and Safe Listening
Tablets, online classes and long car trips mean many children now wear headphones for hours every week. The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that over 1 billion young adults are at risk of permanent, avoidable hearing loss due to unsafe listening, and good habits start in childhood. This guide explains what “volume-limited” means, what the WHO recommends for children, and how the BuddyPhones and KIDdesigns kids’ headphones at LNT compare.
How loud is too loud for children?
The WHO and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) published a global standard for safe listening devices (ITU-T H.870). It sets a weekly “sound allowance” with a special mode for children:
- Children: up to 75 dB for 40 hours a week.
- Adults: up to 80 dB for 40 hours a week.
The louder the sound, the shorter the safe time. In the WHO’s guidance, every 3 dB increase halves the safe listening time for the week. For children that means:
| Volume | Safe listening time per week (children) |
|---|---|
| 75 dB | 40 hours |
| 78 dB | 20 hours |
| 81 dB | 10 hours |
| 84 dB | 5 hours |
| 87 dB | 2.5 hours |
So an 85 dB limit is much safer than an unlimited headset, but it is not a licence to listen all day. Time matters as much as volume.
What does “volume-limited” mean?
Volume-limited headphones are built so the sound cannot go above a set maximum, even if the tablet or phone is turned all the way up. Some let you choose between several limits, so you can use the lowest one for young children and a higher one for noisy places like a plane.

Wired or Bluetooth?
- Bluetooth (Play+, POP Fun, PlayEars+): no cable to tangle or pull, handy for younger children and for moving around. Remember to charge them.
- Wired (Explore, Explore+, KIDdesigns): no battery to run out and nothing to pair, simple for long trips. The Play+ and POP Fun also work with a cable when the battery is empty.
For online classes and calls
If your child joins lessons or calls, choose a model with a microphone: the BuddyPhones Play+ adds StudyMode for clearer voices, the PlayEars+ has a beam mic, and the Explore and Explore+ have an in-line mic on the cable.
Favourite characters
For younger children, a favourite character makes headphones something they actually want to wear. KIDdesigns has wired, volume-limited headphones in Paw Patrol Chase and Marshall, Frozen, Spider-Man, L.O.L. Surprise and Minnie Mouse designs.
Safe listening habits for children
- Use the lowest limit that lets your child hear clearly. On the Play+, start at 75 dB.
- Watch the time, not only the volume: follow the weekly allowance in the table above.
- Take breaks during long listening sessions.
- Do not turn up the volume to drown out noise in a car or plane; in noisy places, shorten listening time instead.
- Get their hearing checked if they often ask you to repeat things or complain of ringing in the ears.
